The Long Dark will get new DLC again as studio shifts devs away from the sequel to survive an ‘uncertain’ industry: ‘We have to adapt to this’
The Long Dark, a survival game that was supposed to conclude after releasing the final story episode of Wintermute earlier this year, is getting a second wind. Developer Hinterland Studio has announced it will create new DLC for the game’s survival mode rather than shift full resources to its planned sequel, Blackfrost.
Originally announced in 2024, Blackfrost was set to follow the early access model of the original game. However, citing an “uncertain” game industry, Hinterland has adjusted its strategy. While Blackfrost remains in development, the studio has reassigned a small team of developers back to The Long Dark to extend its lifespan with fresh content.
The decision reflects broader industry challenges. A Hinterland representative noted that when Blackfrost was announced, “the game industry was in a very different place,” underscoring how rapidly market conditions have shifted. The studio framed the pivot as necessary adaptation: “We have to adapt to this.”
Notably, the shift does not involve layoffs. The Long Dark, which originally launched in early access nine years ago, has maintained a dedicated player base throughout development. By returning focus to survival mode content, Hinterland aims to sustain engagement with the existing game while maintaining forward progress on the sequel.
