Multiple developers report equipment stolen from their Gamescom booths
Multiple exhibitors at Gamescom 2024 in Cologne reported equipment thefts from their booths following overnight raids. Indie developer Ryan Laley, showcasing his asymmetrical survival horror game Mimic, posted a video on X/Twitter describing how his booth was broken into, resulting in the loss of laptops and other essential equipment. The theft forced him to cut his participation at the event short.
Laley emphasized the particular hardship the incident poses for independent developers with limited resources. As a solo developer, replacing the stolen equipment represents a significant financial burden. “Our booth got raided last night – not just mine, others as well,” he explained. “As an indie solo dev, this shit’s expensive, and hard to do all by yourself. And to have this happen is beyond frustrating; it’s heartbreaking.”
The incident highlights security vulnerabilities at one of Europe’s largest gaming events. Police reports were filed in response to the thefts, though the full scope of the raids across all affected booths remains unclear. The targeting of exhibitor equipment represents a serious disruption to developers attempting to showcase their work and network with industry professionals and attendees, underscoring the particular vulnerability of smaller studios at major industry events.
