Thanks to a dedicated team ‘art-directing’ every single NPC, GTA 6 has over 10 times as many unique animations as GTA 5
Rockstar Games has assembled a dedicated team focused solely on animating non-player characters (NPCs) for Grand Theft Auto 6, reflecting the extraordinary scale of the studio’s production efforts. According to Aaron Garbut, co-head of Rockstar North, in an interview with The New York Times, the studio “art-directed each individual” NPC in the game, with meticulous attention paid to environmental storytelling and character consistency.
The level of detail extends far beyond basic animations. Developers considered what each NPC is drinking, marks left on tables, artwork on walls, and visual continuity—such as ensuring pictures feature people with matching tattoos and corresponding family members visible throughout the game world. Every room is thoughtfully designed with intentional NPC placement and behavior.
This comprehensive approach has resulted in GTA 6 featuring over 10 times as many unique animations as Grand Theft Auto 5. The animation scale reportedly exceeds 600,000 unique instances, underscoring Rockstar’s commitment to creating a densely detailed and immersive living world for its next-generation open-world title.
