A Star Wars Galaxies community server was allegedly hacked with AI assistance by a Reddit moderator harboring a primeval grudge

A Star Wars Galaxies community server called “Legends” was reportedly compromised after a Reddit moderator used AI tools to decrypt the server’s client-side game asset files. The alleged hacker, identified as Levarris (username levarrishawk) from the r/swg subreddit, successfully decrypted protected game assets, as confirmed by the server’s development team in a Discord post. According to reports, the intrusion was motivated by a long-standing personal grudge between Levarris and members of the community.

The server’s development team acknowledged the breach publicly, stating in their Discord announcement that they had confirmed Levarris’s involvement and the use of AI tools in the attack. Despite the security incident, the team expressed determination to continue operating the server, noting they would remain transparent with the community and stay focused on what they believe makes the Legends server valuable.

Star Wars Galaxies, which was officially shut down by Sony Online Entertainment in 2011 after fourteen years of operation, has been kept alive through various fan-run community servers like Legends. These servers offer players the classic MMO experience with custom additions, modifications, and quality-of-life improvements developed by dedicated community members. The incident highlights ongoing security challenges facing community-maintained gaming projects and raises concerns about the potential risks of AI-assisted cyberattacks targeting preserved games.
