A Incredible Looking and Unofficial ‘Zelda Maker 64’ Is Coming to Steam

A new fan-made game creation tool called Temple Maker 64 is coming to Steam, offering players the ability to design custom Legend of Zelda levels using a retro Nintendo 64 aesthetic. The project is being developed by Akela-morse, a solo game developer who left their full-time job approximately 18 months ago to focus on the game full-time.

The 27-year-old creator drew inspiration from existing fan-made game editors like Quest Master, Super Dungeon Maker, and Super Dungeon Designer. However, rather than following the top-down 2D pixel art style of those titles, Akela-morse chose to develop Temple Maker 64 with an N64-inspired 3D aesthetic, pushing the fan-creation concept into three-dimensional game design.

The project fills a gap left by Nintendo’s limited approach to modding and user-generated content for its classic franchises. While Super Mario Maker demonstrated the commercial appeal of game creation tools, Nintendo has not released an equivalent tool for The Legend of Zelda series. This has allowed independent developers like Akela-morse to create unofficial alternatives that capture the visual style and mechanics of classic Zelda games.
