AMC Theaters Launches Its Own Film Distribution Company As Small Budget Movies Soar

AMC Theaters has entered the film distribution business with the launch of Leawood Films on August 31, 2026. The new distribution label focuses on bringing small and mid-sized films to theatrical audiences, specializing in movies that are already fully financed and completed. This move represents AMC’s expansion beyond merely exhibiting films to actively shaping the theatrical release landscape.

According to AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron, the initiative stems from consistent audience demand for diverse theatrical content. Aron stated that “moviegoers consistently demonstrate their appetite for a wide variety of theatrical content,” highlighting an opportunity to bring independent films to broader audiences through AMC’s theater network. The CEO emphasized that Leawood Films aims to provide value to filmmakers whose projects might otherwise struggle to secure theatrical distribution.

The launch reflects broader industry trends showing renewed interest in independent and smaller-budget films. By controlling both exhibition and distribution channels, AMC positions itself to support a wider range of content creators while capturing additional revenue streams beyond traditional ticket sales. This vertical integration strategy could help the theater chain compete in an evolving entertainment landscape where streaming services have impacted traditional theatrical releases.
