A 38-year-old NES platformer is getting a Steam remake by its original husband-and-wife team, as the pair’s ‘final major game product’

The Battle of Olympus, an acclaimed side-scrolling platformer originally released on the NES in 1988, is getting a Steam remake in early 2027. The project will be created by the game’s original development team: programmer Yukio Horimoto and artist Reiko Oshida (now Horimoto), who were in a romantic relationship during the original game’s development and have since married.

The reunion marks a significant moment in gaming history, bringing together the creative pair nearly four decades later to reimagine their classic title. Inspired by Greek mythology, the game explores themes that were central to Horimoto’s original vision. The developers have described this Steam remake as their “final major game product,” giving the project additional poignancy as a capstone to their collaborative work.

The announcement highlights a heartwarming approach to game remakes—one driven by creative nostalgia and personal history rather than purely commercial considerations. The early 2027 release window gives fans of the original platformer something to anticipate.
