RIP to Disney+’s Live-Action Gargoyles Reboot

Disney’s live-action adaptation of the classic 1990s animated series Gargoyles has been cancelled. Gargoyles creator Greg Weisman confirmed that Atomic Monster, the production company led by filmmaker James Wan, which held the development license for a Disney+ live-action version, is no longer moving forward with the project. “The Atomic Monster had the license to develop a live-action Gargoyles for Disney+, and that’s dead,” Weisman stated in a recent interview, adding that there are currently no plans for a live-action adaptation moving forward.

The original Gargoyles animated series premiered in 1994 and followed a group of supernatural stone creatures who awaken at night to defend modern-day New York City from threats. The series became an iconic part of 1990s television, featuring memorable voice acting by Keith David as the leader of the gargoyle clan. The planned Disney+ adaptation represents another cancelled streaming project from the entertainment giant as it continues to evaluate its original programming slate.
