Halloween: The Game Gets Denied a Rating in Yet Another Country

Halloween: The Game has been denied a rating by Japan’s Computer Entertainment Rating Organization (CERO), making it unavailable on PlayStation 5 in the country when it launches on September 9.

In Japan, all mature game releases on the PlayStation Store require a domestic CERO rating. When CERO refuses to rate a game, developers can attempt to obtain an International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) rating as an alternative pathway to digital distribution. While the IARC has approved Halloween: The Game for release, this workaround does not extend to PlayStation 5 users in Japan, effectively blocking the title from Sony’s console in that market.

This marks the second geographic market where Halloween: The Game faces restrictions ahead of its launch. Australia has also restricted the game’s availability, adding to the title’s growing list of regional challenges. The rating denials represent a significant commercial obstacle for the game in major gaming markets.

The situation highlights ongoing tensions between game classification bodies and publishers regarding mature content. CERO’s denial suggests the game contains elements—likely related to its horror theme—that the Japanese rating organization deemed unsuitable for its system. Despite IARC approval, PlayStation’s policies in Japan do not recognize alternative ratings as sufficient for PS Store distribution, leaving PS5 owners unable to purchase the title through official digital channels.
