Lion King Lyricist Ordered to Pay Nearly $40,000 to Cover Comedian’s Attorney Fees After Suing Him Over Joke Translation of ‘Circle of Life’ Lyrics

South African comedian Jonasi (Learnmore Mwanyenyeka) faced legal action after making a comedic translation of the iconic Zulu opening lyrics from Disney’s The Lion King during an episode of the One54 Africa podcast in February 2026. His joke translated the famous line as “Look, there is a lion! Oh my god,” which drew laughs from the podcast’s hosts.

Lebohang Morake, the Grammy-winning lyricist who wrote the Zulu lyrics for “The Circle of Life,” filed a $27 million lawsuit against Jonasi in March 2026, apparently not amused by the comedian’s playful interpretation of his work.

However, the case ultimately did not go in Morake’s favor. Following the unsuccessful lawsuit, a court has now ordered Morake to pay nearly $40,000 to cover Jonasi’s attorney fees. The decision represents a significant legal setback for the acclaimed lyricist, who sought substantial damages over what amounts to comedic commentary on one of popular culture’s most recognizable songs. The outcome highlights questions about artistic protection, fair use, and the limits of legal recourse against comedic critique.
