PS5 Adds Free Live And On-Demand Movie And TV Channels, In Exchange For Watching Ads

Sony has launched Live TV on PS5, bringing free, ad-supported streaming television to PlayStation 5 users in the United States starting August 31, 2026. The new feature, developed by Sony Pictures Television, offers players access to over 100 live TV channels directly from the PS5’s Media tab, along with a growing selection of on-demand movies, TV shows, sports, news, and anime.

This move positions PlayStation 5 in the growing FAST (Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television) market, a segment already dominated by services like Tubi, Pluto, and Roku. While these FAST apps were previously available on PS5 as standalone applications, Live TV on PS5 marks Sony’s own entry into this segment with a native feature built into the console.

The programming includes classic television series such as Community, The Shield, and The Walking Dead, alongside various anime series and films spanning action, horror, and sci-fi genres, including titles like Silent Hill: Revelation. Sony has indicated that new channels and additional content will be added over time.

To access the service, players navigate to the Media tab on their PS5 home screen, select the Live TV on PS5 icon, and sign in with their PlayStation account. The feature is currently available only in the United States, with no announced plans for broader international expansion.

This announcement aligns with broader industry trends of console manufacturers diversifying beyond gaming, with Microsoft similarly offering FAST channel apps like Tubi and Pluto on Xbox.
