Walmart Is Selling Hot Pokémon Card Sets in a New and Improved Way
Walmart has launched a new Collectibles Drawing system to address persistent frustration among Pokémon card buyers. The retailer will conduct random drawings to determine which customers can purchase hot Pokémon Trading Card Game sets, replacing the previous system that saw hours-long queues despite receiving substantial weekly stock.
The drawing system, which debuted earlier in August, is being applied to Pokémon cards starting Monday, August 31. Customers who wish to participate must sign up during a designated time window. After the signup period closes, Walmart randomly selects winners from all participants, granting them the opportunity to purchase available Pokémon card products.
Walmart has faced persistent criticism from the collecting community over its handling of Pokémon card sales. The retailer’s inability to manage demand effectively has resulted in frustrated customers spending hours waiting in virtual queues only to miss out on purchases. The new drawing approach aims to democratize purchasing opportunities by removing the advantage gained from early queue entry or bot software usage, theoretically providing equal odds to all registered participants.
Whether this randomized system will effectively solve Pokémon card availability issues remains to be seen, but it represents a significant departure from Walmart’s previous distribution model for high-demand collectibles.
