The Witcher 4 already runs on all target platforms - CD Projekt Red not taking any chances after Cyberpunk 2077
CD Projekt Red is taking deliberate steps to prevent The Witcher 4 from experiencing the launch problems that plagued Cyberpunk 2077. The developer has adopted an aggressive multiplatform optimization strategy, with The Witcher 4 currently running on all of its target platforms—PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X.
Studio co-CEO Michal Nowakowski confirmed the approach to Game Developer, stating that developers can immediately launch the game on any target platform and that “it’s going to run.” This commitment reflects CDPR’s determination to avoid repeating the performance catastrophe that marked Cyberpunk 2077’s debut.
Cyberpunk 2077’s launch was marked by severe technical issues, particularly on PlayStation 4, where the game’s performance problems were so severe that Sony removed it from the PlayStation Store. Even after the game’s eventual return to the platform six months later, Sony added a disclaimer warning potential buyers of its instability. While the PC version suffered from numerous bugs, the console performance was disastrous.
By ensuring The Witcher 4 runs on all platforms during active development, rather than attempting late-stage ports, CDPR aims to identify and address technical issues early. This proactive approach represents a significant departure from the studio’s previous strategy and underscores the lasting impact of Cyberpunk 2077’s troubled launch on the company’s development philosophy.
