Xbox CEO refuses to confirm whether next console Helix will have a disc drive

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has declined to confirm whether the company’s next console, codenamed Project Helix, will include a disc drive. During a BBC interview, when asked about the future of physical media support, Sharma remained evasive, redirecting focus to Xbox’s commitment to game preservation and library portability. She emphasized that regardless of whether players prefer physical or digital games, “your libraries can go wherever you are,” underscoring the company’s priority on cross-platform compatibility and ensuring players can access their collections across devices.

Sharma also acknowledged the significant installed base of physical games, noting that “stacks of games on everybody’s shelves” across Europe represent valuable player investments that warrant preservation. The refusal to confirm disc drive inclusion signals a potential shift in Xbox’s hardware strategy for the next generation. Currently, the Xbox Series X maintains an optical drive, making physical game support a key differentiator from its all-digital Series S counterpart. This ambiguity around Project Helix’s disc drive capabilities reflects broader industry tensions between the accelerating move toward digital-only distribution and consumer preference for owning physical media and backward compatibility.
