Ananta Developers Are Counting On You Getting Attached To Its Characters

Ananta, an upcoming free-to-play open-world action game, is designed with monetisation in mind—specifically, developers are banking on players developing emotional attachments to characters as the primary driver for spending.

According to hands-on coverage from Gamescom, the game’s story missions represent its strongest element. Players encountered narrative-driven sequences involving “cute little anime characters” undertaking stealth-based objectives, such as escaping a mansion. The demonstrated scenario proved engaging enough that players expressed genuine concern for the characters’ safety and wanted to help ensure their survival.

The developers have intentionally structured the gameplay to allow extended time with characters, enabling players to become familiar with their personalities and life stories. This relationship-building approach is a calculated design choice meant to foster emotional investment strong enough to motivate in-game spending.

However, the coverage raises a fundamental question about the efficacy of this strategy: whether emotional investment in characters alone is sufficient motivation for players to spend money in a free-to-play title. The hands-on experience demonstrated that the character-focused narrative segments work well mechanically and emotionally, but the connection between that engagement and actual monetisation conversion remains uncertain.
