Disney Scraps Live Action Reboot of the Cult Classic Fantasy Series Gargoyles

Disney has canceled its planned live-action adaptation of Gargoyles, a cult classic animated series from the 1990s that was set to premiere on Disney+. The cancellation was confirmed by Greg Weisman, co-creator of the original show, who told ComicsOnline that there are currently no plans for alternative revival attempts.

The original Gargoyles series aired from 1994 to 1996 as part of a renaissance in animated television that also included critically acclaimed shows like Batman: The Animated Series and X-Men: The Animated Series. The show distinguished itself through serialized storytelling and complex character development, launching with a five-part pilot that introduced its central premise: a group of nocturnal guardian creatures who turn to stone during daylight hours and emerge at night to protect Manhattan.

This marks another setback for Disney’s attempts to revive the property in live-action form. The franchise’s repeated struggles to secure a successful reboot suggest ongoing challenges in adapting the series’ unique blend of dark fantasy, urban setting, and character-driven narratives for modern audiences. Despite the show’s devoted fanbase and lasting cultural impact among viewers who grew up during its original run, the live-action format apparently failed to move forward in development.

The cancellation leaves the future of Gargoyles uncertain at Disney, with Weisman expressing uncertainty about whether the company will pursue other revival projects. The cult classic remains available through streaming and home media, preserving access to the original animated series for both longtime fans and new audiences discovering the show decades after its debut.
