Double Fine will finally make Brutal Legend 2, but only if its new Kickstarter campaign reaches an almost impossible $100m

After nearly two decades, Double Fine Productions is ready to develop Brutal Legend 2—but only if the studio can raise an almost impossible $100 million through Kickstarter.

The announcement comes following Double Fine’s split from Xbox in the wake of Microsoft’s controversial studio restructuring and mass layoffs. Having regained its independence, the studio now operates as self-funded and has recovered ownership of its entire game catalog, including Psychonauts, Kiln, and Brutal Legend.

Double Fine launched its Amnesia Fortnight 2026 Kickstarter campaign to fund an internal game jam, where developers pitch ideas that are prototyped over two weeks. The community votes on which concepts move forward into full production. The campaign’s base goal is $400,000, with a stretch goal of $100 million explicitly earmarked for Brutal Legend 2—a figure most observers acknowledge is playfully unrealistic. At the time of reporting, the campaign had secured nearly $290,000 in pledges, about 71% of the base goal.

The Amnesia Fortnight format has proven successful in the past, having produced games like Costume Quest, Iron Brigade, and Stacking. Double Fine previously used Kickstarter to fund Broken Age before joining Xbox. Now independent again, the studio is leveraging crowdfunding to fuel its experimental game development pipeline.
