Modern Warfare 4 Devs Couldn’t Beat Players at Their Own Mobility Course
Infinity Ward’s developers created a competitive challenge they couldn’t win. During the development of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, the team designed a mobility course to test and refine the game’s new movement systems. What started as a development tool evolved into an internal competition that captivated the studio.
The competitive spirit intensified as developers sought ways to improve their times. According to multiplayer technical designer Jack Hoppus, team members were recording their screens and analyzing footage frame-by-frame to shave seconds off their runs. The course became a point of pride within the studio, with developers pushing themselves to master the new mobility mechanics.
However, the developers’ dominance was short-lived. When players gained access to Modern Warfare 4 and the mobility course, they quickly surpassed the development team’s best times. This outcome highlights a common dynamic in game development: developers, despite their intimate knowledge of game systems, often cannot compete with the sheer number of dedicated players experimenting with and perfecting mechanics.
