Christopher Judge Physically Prepared to Play Kratos in Live-Action God of War Series, but Backed Down for This Reason

Actor Christopher Judge revealed that he physically prepared to portray Kratos in Prime Video’s upcoming live-action adaptation of God of War but ultimately declined the role. Speaking at Fan Expo Canada, Judge disclosed that during early project discussions, he committed to serious preparation, including a rigorous workout regimen to achieve a Spartan physique and memorizing script pages.

However, Judge encountered unexpected obstacles that prompted his withdrawal. Most notably, he struggled significantly with memorizing his lines—an unusual difficulty for an experienced actor—which he interpreted as a clear signal from both his mind and body that the role was not right for him. Judge had initially been drawn to the opportunity, viewing it as a meaningful legacy project for his grandson, but ultimately decided to step back from the casting process.

The live-action God of War series represents the franchise’s expansion from gaming into television, with Prime Video as the platform. The project remains in development as producers continue their search for an actor to embody the iconic Spartan warrior.
