Persona 4 Revival won’t finally realize Yosuke’s gay romance because Atlus thinks it’d have to let you kiss every other guy, too
Persona 4 Revival, an upcoming modern remake of the beloved JRPG classic, will not include a long-rumored gay romance option between protagonist Yu Narukami and his best friend Yosuke Hanamura, despite evidence suggesting it was originally planned for the game.
Both English and Japanese voice lines discovered in the original Persona 4 and Persona 4 Golden strongly implied a romantic storyline between the two characters was designed but ultimately cut from release. When Persona 4 Revival was announced, many fans hoped Atlus would use the modernized version as an opportunity to finally add this missing feature—particularly given contemporary increased focus on LGBTQ+ representation in gaming.
However, Atlus has declined to include the Yosuke romance in Revival. According to the studio, their reasoning is that adding a gay romance option with Yosuke would logically require them to implement similar options for all other male characters, which they apparently do not intend to do. An Atlus representative stated: “If we do Yosuke, we kind of have to do it for all the guys.”
This decision reveals Atlus’s approach to romance options in the Persona series—apparently structured as binary choices rather than flexible systems that can accommodate varied relationship types. The decision disappointed many fans who have long advocated for the Yosuke romance, seeing it as a meaningful way to acknowledge content that was clearly developed but abandoned in the original versions.
