Sega-owned Rovio is shutting down its Copenhagen studio

Sega-owned Rovio has shut down its Copenhagen studio following the cancellation of its mobile game Sonic Blitz. The decision comes after a redundancy process, with approximately 20 employees who were working on the now-canceled title affected by the closure.

Rovio confirmed the closure to Mobilegamer.biz, stating that it will “discontinue all its operations in Denmark.” While the redundancy process is still ongoing, the exact number of affected staff members has not been finalized. The studio shutdown represents a significant restructuring for the Finnish gaming company best known for the Angry Birds franchise.

In a statement, Rovio acknowledged the difficulty of the decision and its impact on affected employees. The company emphasized its commitment to supporting impacted team members through the transition, offering comprehensive transition packages including dedicated outplacement services and wellbeing support to help staff members secure new employment opportunities.

Rovio CEO and Sega West COO expressed that while the team should be proud of what was achieved on Sonic Blitz, the game ultimately “didn’t work” commercially. The closure reflects ongoing challenges within the broader games industry, which has faced significant headwinds in recent years. For employees unable to be reassigned to other projects within Rovio, the company has committed to providing comprehensive support during this transition period.
