“Most” of the developers behind critically acclaimed Star Wars Zero Company were furloughed ahead of launch
Bit Reactor furloughed approximately 80% of its workforce weeks before Star Wars Zero Company’s August 27 launch, the studio has confirmed. The tactical turn-based strategy game, which has received critical acclaim and currently ranks as Steam’s second best-selling title, left most of its development team in an unpaid leave of absence.
Bit Reactor stated the difficult decision was made before the game’s commercial performance was certain, citing financial constraints and concerns about the launch. The studio emphasized the decision was independent of publisher Electronic Arts and Star Wars license holder Disney. A skeleton crew of developers remained on active payroll to address post-launch bugs.
Reports indicate the game was developed on an exceptionally tight $50 million budget that reportedly depleted just before release, preventing additional development work such as expanded lightsaber animations. Furloughs differ from layoffs—affected employees retain their employment status but receive no compensation and remain uncertain whether they will be rehired.
The furloughs have added pressure to an already troubled studio. Co-founders are engaged in a legal dispute over Bit Reactor’s ownership, and former employees have alleged the company concealed the furloughs while leadership promoted the studio’s next projects at industry events like Gamescom.
Despite these behind-the-scenes struggles, Star Wars Zero Company has proven commercially successful, earning positive reviews from critics and players alike. The contrast between the game’s critical reception and the workforce challenges highlights ongoing pressures in game development, where financial constraints can force difficult decisions even during a project’s successful launch.
