The Witcher 3 Remastered should run just fine on the Steam Deck, say devs

CD Projekt Red has reassured players that The Witcher 3 Remastered will run smoothly on the Steam Deck, dispelling concerns about whether the free update would strain handheld hardware. The 11-year-old game is receiving a visual overhaul through its remaster, raising questions about whether enhanced graphics could impact performance on the portable device.

Speaking to PC Gamer ahead of Gamescom 2026, Jakub Kutrzuba, CD Projekt Red’s executive producer of external projects, confirmed that the remaster maintains strong performance on Valve’s handheld console. The optimization improvements stem from a new rendering engine that enhances the experience rather than taxing the hardware. According to Kutrzuba, general optimization work has made the remastered version suitable for the Steam Deck without compromising playability. The developer also noted that similar compatibility considerations apply to Nintendo Switch 2, signaling a broader strategy to bring the remastered version to multiple platforms.

The confirmation provides reassurance to Steam Deck players who maintain PC gaming libraries on the device. Historically, visual upgrades and remasters can introduce performance issues on lower-powered hardware, so CD Projekt Red’s proactive emphasis on optimization appears to have addressed these potential concerns upfront.
