CD Projekt Red powerless regarding PS5 disc edition of The Witcher 4, but promises a game box with “feelies” whatever happens

The Witcher 4, targeting a 2028 release from CD Projekt Red, won’t guarantee a physical disc edition for PlayStation 5, according to joint CEO Michał Nowakowski. The developer stated it has no control over such decisions, as game discs for first-party platforms must be manufactured by Sony and Microsoft’s own factories.

Sony has announced plans to end support for physical PlayStation discs by 2028, the same year The Witcher 4 is expected to launch. Microsoft is similarly expected to discontinue disc support. This timing creates uncertainty for physical releases of major titles at that time.

“We have no influence on the policies of the first parties,” Nowakowski explained at Gamescom. “The discs for the first parties, including PlayStation, have to be manufactured in their own factories. So, if they stop manufacturing indeed by 2028, then yes, we won’t have a disc.”

Despite the disc uncertainty, CD Projekt Red has committed to including physical “feelies”—collectible items or merchandise—with the game box, regardless of whether a traditional disc edition is available. This reflects the studio’s continued commitment to physical media offerings and represents an alternative way to deliver tangible products to collectors even as console makers transition to digital-only ecosystems.
