Acer’s new concept hardware is a gaming handheld with a keyboard

Acer has unveiled Project DualPlay Mini, a concept Windows gaming handheld that attempts to bridge the gap between portable gaming devices and full-featured gaming laptops. The device features a swiveling screen paired with a flip-out keyboard, offering users both traditional handheld gaming controls and keyboard functionality for productivity or more demanding gaming titles.

The DualPlay Mini follows in the footsteps of Acer’s Predator Atlas 8 handheld and combines hardware from Acer’s established gaming lineup. In its default configuration, the device features analog sticks, a D-pad, and Xbox-style ABXY face buttons, along with triggers on each side—a control scheme familiar to gamers using portable devices like the Steam Deck.

The handheld represents Acer’s effort to address a growing market segment where gamers struggle to choose between the portability of Steam Deck-style handhelds and the versatility of gaming laptops. By incorporating a keyboard mechanism, the DualPlay Mini aims to offer greater versatility while maintaining a more compact form factor than traditional gaming laptops. The swiveling screen design allows the device to adapt between different usage modes—from purely handheld gaming to laptop-like productivity work.

As a concept device, Project DualPlay Mini’s path to commercial release remains unclear, but it signals Acer’s commitment to the expanding portable gaming market that has grown significantly following the Steam Deck’s success.
