Witcher 4 Dev “Not Worried” About Future Of Consoles Despite Rising Costs
CD Projekt Red has expressed confidence in the gaming industry’s near-term future despite rising development costs and changing platform hardware. In recent interviews, co-CEO Michał Nowakowski stated the company is “not worried” about consoles becoming obsolete, arguing they remain essential for reaching casual and semi-casual players. He emphasized that consoles will “weather the storm” of current pricing concerns, though he acknowledged uncertainty around rumors of delayed PS6 and next-generation Xbox releases.
The studio’s commitment to console gaming is evident in its approach to The Witcher 4, though the upcoming title will not include a physical disc version on PlayStation 5. This decision stems from Sony’s planned discontinuation of disc drives on the PS5 starting January 2028, with The Witcher 4 releasing after that date. CD Projekt has clarified the company cannot influence platform holder decisions, noting it has no control over Sony’s hardware evolution.
In related announcements, CD Projekt demonstrated consumer-friendly business practices with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The studio confirmed it never considered charging existing owners for the upcoming remastered edition—a choice Nowakowski described as never having been up for debate internally. All previous Witcher 3 owners will receive the remaster at no additional cost. The studio is monetizing The Witcher 3’s expansion instead, with the “Songs of the Past” expansion planned for 2027.
Across these announcements, CD Projekt’s leadership reiterated its philosophy that “content is the king,” suggesting the quality of games matters more than the specific platform distribution method. This perspective appears to guide the studio’s decisions on both console strategy and pricing policies going forward.
