Lego Skylines is already looking like a treat, but I suspect the real magic’s in the stuff Paradox won’t talk about just yet

Lego Skylines, a new city builder from Paradox Interactive and Iceflake Studios, has been revealed and previewed at Gamescom. Rather than being a simple Lego-themed skin over the existing Cities Skylines, the game is a standalone title built from the ground up specifically for the Lego franchise.

The game features a more intimate, personal approach to city building compared to traditional city simulators. Players create a Lego minifigure avatar and, rather than zoning residential areas, literally construct individual homes for Lego families with specific needs and wants. This smaller-scale approach shifts the focus away from complex traffic management systems toward decorating and customization—making it more approachable than the original Cities Skylines while retaining meaningful depth.

The game includes a campaign mode with early and late-game scenarios. Hands-on previews ranging from 35 minutes to several hours demonstrated that Lego Skylines offers enough complexity and strategic depth to appeal to serious city-building fans, despite its simpler overall design philosophy. Developers have kept certain mechanics and features under wraps, suggesting additional details remain to be revealed.
