Microsoft is finally making it easier to mute Teams without hiding from your boss

Microsoft is rolling out a new notification pause feature for Teams that will give users greater control over their chat notifications without disrupting their availability status. The global pause button allows users to temporarily silence notifications for a custom period of time without changing their public status to “Do Not Disturb.” This distinction is key—users can mute incoming messages while remaining visible to colleagues, addressing a common workplace frustration where silencing notifications often forces them to signal unavailability to their team.

The feature addresses a gap in Teams’ existing mute functionality, which already offered various options but lacked an intuitive way to temporarily quiet notifications without affecting presence status. Users have long sought a way to take breaks from notification alerts without broadcasting “Do Not Disturb” to their colleagues, which can signal disengagement or unavailability for urgent matters. The pause feature solves this by letting users remain “Available” while filtering out notifications.

The rollout is beginning this month with full availability expected by early October 2026. Microsoft announced the change through the Microsoft 365 Message Center Archive, indicating that it affects all users across the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. This update represents Microsoft’s ongoing effort to improve workplace flexibility and user experience in Teams, recognizing the importance of notification management in modern remote and hybrid work environments.
