Overwatch Is Getting the Critical Role Treatment With Upcoming TTRPG Adventure
Blizzard Entertainment is bringing its free-to-play hero-shooter Overwatch to the tabletop with Questwatch, a new TTRPG adventure debuting at BlizzCon on September 13. The live event will be hosted by Matthew Mercer, the renowned Dungeon Master behind the popular podcast series Critical Role and its Dungeons & Dragons campaigns. Notably, Mercer also voices Cassidy, one of Overwatch’s iconic heroes.
This marks the first official Overwatch TTRPG experience and represents a step beyond Blizzard’s previous crossovers with major brands like Burger King, Fortnite, and Hello Kitty. While those collaborations have delivered cosmetic skins and limited-time events, Questwatch aims to bridge the game’s sci-fi universe with the improvisational storytelling that has made Critical Role a phenomenon in tabletop gaming circles. The collaboration leverages Mercer’s dual connection to both franchises, potentially introducing Overwatch players to the TTRPG community and vice versa.
The event underscores the growing intersection between digital gaming and tabletop role-playing, particularly as live-service games increasingly seek new ways to engage their audiences beyond traditional in-game content. By hosting the experience at BlizzCon, Blizzard ensures the event will attract both dedicated Overwatch fans and TTRPG enthusiasts.
