I’ve been worried Persona is succumbing to saminess, but Persona 4 Revival feels just as good as its predecessor did 16 years ago
Atlus’s Persona 4 Revival represents the latest entry in the publisher’s ongoing visual overhaul of its modern Persona trilogy. Following Persona 5’s exceptional commercial success, Atlus has adapted its distinctive visual style to remake earlier series entries. Persona 3 Reload was the first to receive this treatment, and Persona 4 Revival continues with redesigned character models—removing the original’s chibi aesthetic—and a more detailed recreation of the town of Inaba.
The original Persona 4 Golden has maintained a devoted fanbase over its 16-year history since its initial release. The remake aims to introduce that classic experience to modern audiences while updating the visuals to align with Persona 5’s acclaimed art direction.
A PC Gamer reviewer who played the game at Gamescom expressed initial concerns about whether repeatedly applying Persona 5’s visual template across multiple remakes might result in creative uniformity or “saminess” within the franchise. However, after hands-on experience, the reviewer found that Persona 4 Revival successfully captures the same quality and charm that defined Persona 4 Golden, suggesting the remake maintains the original’s distinctive appeal despite concerns about series repetition.
