Square Enix denies it’s going private following Japanese reports to the contrary
Japanese business magazine Sentaku reported that Square Enix, the publisher behind franchises including Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and Dragon Quest, was exploring the possibility of going private with interest from foreign investment funds. The report caused Square Enix’s stock price to surge by 7 to 12 percent on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
In response, Square Enix issued an official statement denying the claims. “No consideration is currently being given within the Company to taking the Company private,” the publisher stated. The company emphasized that the information reported by Sentaku was not announced by Square Enix itself, clarifying that the report was based on unconfirmed speculation rather than any actual corporate plans or discussions.
The swift denial appears aimed at quelling investor speculation that arose from the initial rumors and to clarify the company’s official position on a potential acquisition or privatization.
