D&D Could Go Back to the Underdark Soon With a New Campaign
Wizards of the Coast appears to be planning to return to the Underdark, the dangerous subterranean realm beneath the surface of the Forgotten Realms and Greyhawk settings. Recent clues suggest an official Underdark-focused campaign may be coming to Dungeons & Dragons in the near future.
The evidence came from two sources. First, Unearthed Arcana—a playtest material series used to gather player feedback—included hints of “Underdark Options” subclasses that could be incorporated into future player character builds. Second, during Gen Con 2026’s D&D Vision Keynote, subtle references to the Underdark were revealed, further suggesting the publisher is actively developing content around this setting.
The Underdark represents one of D&D’s most iconic environments, known as a lightless realm inhabited by dangerous creatures including giant spiders, tentacled monstrosities, and other horrors. Despite its popularity among players, it has been several years since Wizards of the Coast released an official campaign or major supplement focused on this setting.
This potential announcement marks a significant moment for the D&D community, as dedicated Underdark experiences have been in high demand among long-time players. The playtest materials and Gen Con hints suggest the publisher is seriously considering bringing this dangerous realm back into official D&D storylines and character options.
