Owner of nearly decade-old Dell laptop reportedly wore through the wrist rest and is ‘being stabbed by carbon fibers’
A Dell XPS 13 laptop owner has reported experiencing physical discomfort from severely worn-through palm rests after nearly a decade of regular use. Parker Drouillard, posting on X, detailed how their Dell XPS 9370 model (circa 2018) has degraded to the point where the carbon fiber composite palm rest material is now exposed and causing injury. The user described the sensation as “being stabbed by carbon fibers,” comparing the constant discomfort to “being hurt by a cactus.” The black and white XPS 13 variant features carbon fiber composite palm rests designed for aesthetic appeal and durability, but this particular unit’s extensive degradation suggests the material may not withstand years of daily contact with users’ hands and wrists. Drouillard questioned whether this represents a design flaw and potential health hazard, pointing out that material degradation leading to exposed sharp fibers seems like a significant oversight in premium product design. The incident highlights broader concerns about material selection in laptop design and whether premium materials are adequately tested for long-term durability under repeated contact and wear.
