Dungeons And Dragons Icons Could Take The TTRPG To A Modern-Day Setting

The D&D Icons initiative, spearheaded by actor and longtime Dungeons & Dragons enthusiast Joe Manganiello, aims to expand the tabletop RPG by bringing together the classic game with celebrated licensed properties and universes. The initiative builds on famous D&D-related series from prominent creators, including R.A. Salvatore’s acclaimed The Legend of Drizzt franchise.

While the Icons program is expected to draw heavily from traditional fantasy settings, Manganiello has indicated that the scope extends beyond classic fantasy tropes. Speaking at Gen Con 2026, Manganiello revealed that modern-day settings are being considered as part of the Icons program’s future offerings. He expressed enthusiasm for developing games set in contemporary times, particularly those exploring emerging themes around genetics and military science in modern contexts.

Manganiello’s comments hint that the Icons initiative is positioned to diversify D&D beyond its traditional medieval-fantasy foundation. By incorporating modern settings alongside licensed legacy content, the program could open D&D to new audiences and provide fresh storytelling opportunities while maintaining the franchise’s core appeal.
