Final Fantasy 7 Revelation’s Official Physical Release Comes With a Huge Asterisk
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation’s physical edition was officially announced during the Final Fantasy 14 Berlin Fan Fest, with director Naoki Hamaguchi revealing the game’s release date of April 8, 2027. While Square Enix confirmed that a physical edition is indeed happening, the announcement includes a significant caveat.
The physical edition will ship on a single PS5 Blu-ray disc, marking a departure from its predecessor Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which shipped on two discs. However, the single-disc physical release requires an internet connection to download additional game data necessary to play the game. This requirement applies across all platforms.
Square Enix’s approach represents a middle ground between traditional full-content physical releases and modern releases that only include a digital redemption code. While players do receive a physical disc, they cannot play the game offline without first downloading supplementary data. This announcement reflects ongoing industry trends around game distribution, where physical media increasingly serves as a convenient alternative to digital-only purchases while still relying on internet connectivity for complete content delivery.
