Final Fantasy VII Revelation Is A Game-Key Card On Switch 2, And It’s No Wonder With That File Size
Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy VII Revelation will release on Nintendo Switch 2 in April 2027, continuing the Remake trilogy’s presence on Nintendo’s console. The game will launch as a Game-Key Card release—a physical card containing a download code rather than the full game—at £69.99 / $69.99. This format is necessary due to the game’s substantial file size, which exceeds cartridge storage capacity.
The Game-Key Card release aligns with the previous two Remake trilogy entries, Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which also utilized the same format on Switch 2. Pre-orders are available through Square Enix’s official store.
The Game-Key Card has emerged as Nintendo’s solution for distributing large AAA titles on Switch 2, allowing publishers to release full-scale games without cartridge storage limitations. Final Fantasy VII Revelation’s adoption of this format underscores both the game’s technical ambitions and the practical hardware constraints of physical media on the platform.
