GTA 6 Fishing And Hunting Doesn’t Work Like You Think It Does

Rockstar Games has clarified the mechanics of fishing in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6, confirming that the feature operates under significant limitations compared to previous Rockstar titles. According to Rob Nelson of Rockstar North in an interview with YouTuber TGG, fishing in GTA 6 will be strictly catch-and-release, with players unable to keep or retain any fish they catch.

When asked about this restriction, Nelson explained that keeping fish “didn’t fit this game,” noting that fishing is intended primarily as a recreational activity rather than a survival or sustenance mechanic. Players will still be able to engage with fishing through related challenges and collectible systems.

This represents a notable departure from Rockstar’s 2018 release Red Dead Redemption 2, where fishing served a more practical purpose. In that game, set in 1899, players could catch various fish species and prepare them as food through cooking. The design choice made sense within RDR2’s historical setting and survival elements.

GTA 6’s modern-day setting provides a different context for such mechanics. The game’s protagonists, Jason and Lucia, operate in contemporary Vice City and have ready access to numerous conventional food sources through restaurants and shops, reducing the narrative need for hunting and fishing as survival methods. This shift reflects how Rockstar is tailoring gameplay systems to match the game’s setting and story.

The confirmation suggests Rockstar is being deliberate about which mechanics from its previous open-world games carry forward, prioritizing design coherence with GTA 6’s modern urban environment over feature parity with past titles.
