I got hands-on with Lenovo’s new $699 IdeaPad Vibe, which goes up against the MacBook Neo, and choosing a color may be harder than choosing a CPU

Lenovo has launched the IdeaPad Vibe lineup at $699, entering the competitive market for premium portable computers with a direct challenge to Apple’s MacBook Neo. Following Dell’s recent 14-inch competitor announcement, Lenovo is differentiating itself through an emphasis on color customization and design personalization rather than relying solely on traditional selling points like processors, AI capabilities, and battery performance.

The standout feature is Lenovo’s approach to color options. While most PC manufacturers treat color choices as secondary considerations, offering limited neutral variants like silver and gray, Lenovo is positioning vibrant color options and personalization as central product features. This reflects a broader market shift where aesthetics and personal expression are becoming primary purchase drivers alongside technical specifications.

A hands-on review in New York revealed that despite competitive technical specifications, the most immediately striking aspect was the visual differentiation from conventional laptops. This strategy suggests Lenovo is betting that consumers are fatigued with the homogeneous design language dominating the premium laptop market, particularly Apple’s limited color palette.
