Naughty Dog ‘Not Done’ With The Last of Us, but Studio Not Involved With HBO Show’s 3rd Season
Naughty Dog studio head Neil Druckmann has confirmed that neither he nor the developer will be involved with the third season of HBO’s The Last of Us adaptation. In an interview with The Washington Post, Druckmann stated that he had no role in shaping the season’s creative direction and that Naughty Dog was not given a creative role in the show’s development. He emphasized that he cannot speak to production progress on the upcoming season.
Despite the studio’s distance from the HBO series, Druckmann suggested that this separation does not signal the end of Naughty Dog’s involvement with The Last of Us franchise. His comments indicate that the studio is planning future projects within the universe, though the nature of these projects—whether a proper sequel, revival of a canceled title, or other content—remains unspecified.
The separation of creative duties between the game developer and the television adaptation marks a notable shift in how the franchise is being handled across mediums. This move allows the HBO show to develop its own creative direction independent of the original creators, while leaving room for Naughty Dog to pursue its own vision for the franchise’s video game future.
