New Star Trek Movie Is ‘Trek Meets Crimson Tide,’ Writers Say
A new Star Trek theatrical film is in development after more than a decade without a major theatrical release for the franchise. Directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who are helming the project, recently shared details about their creative vision in an interview with Inverse.
The directing pair cited two notable Hollywood films as key influences on their approach: Training Day and Crimson Tide. Training Day, which features Ethan Hawke as a rookie LAPD narcotics officer paired with Denzel Washington’s corrupt detective Alonzo Harris, appears to inform the film’s character dynamics and moral tension. Crimson Tide, a submarine-based thriller, seems to influence the project’s high-stakes dramatic atmosphere.
These influences suggest the new Star Trek film will blend the franchise’s science fiction exploration with contemporary thriller conventions, focusing on interpersonal conflict and institutional drama.
