Xbox to cap Cloud Gaming hours for Game Pass subscribers
Microsoft is implementing monthly hour limits on Xbox Cloud Gaming starting in November 2026, restricting all Game Pass subscription tiers. Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will be capped at 15 hours per month, Game Pass Premium at 10 hours, and Game Pass Essential at 5 hours—a significant departure from the current unlimited access. Players can purchase additional cloud gaming hours through the Xbox Store once they exhaust their monthly allocation.
The company attributes the change to managing infrastructure costs and estimates it will impact approximately 4% of its Game Pass subscriber base. Microsoft has acknowledged the shift is a “meaningful change” particularly for heavy cloud gaming users, representing a reversal less than a year after the company expanded cloud gaming access across all Game Pass tiers.
As part of broader Xbox Cloud Gaming updates, Microsoft is also introducing a new pay-as-you-go model allowing non-subscribers to purchase cloud access directly through the Xbox Store on an hourly basis. The move reflects Microsoft’s continued evolution of its subscription service monetization strategy and cloud gaming platform.
