Joe Manganiello Wants D&D Icons To Honor The Creator Of Dungeons & Dragons

Dungeons & Dragons is expanding its creative universe with the announcement of a new product line called D&D Icons at Gen Con. The initiative aims to bring together prominent storytellers and creators to develop fresh narratives and content for the Forgotten Realms setting.

Joe Manganiello, best known for his role in True Blood, has been appointed as chief creative officer for the D&D Icons line. Manganiello has maintained a long-standing relationship with the tabletop franchise and brings his creative expertise to the project.

According to Manganiello’s account, the project originated from a conversation with Dan Ayoub, Head of Dungeons & Dragons at Wizards of the Coast, approximately one year prior to the Gen Con announcement. Ayoub asked Manganiello what he would do if given creative freedom with the franchise, leading to Manganiello’s proposal for a dedicated product line that would unite high-profile creators to contribute original D&D stories.

A central goal of the D&D Icons initiative is to honor and continue the legacy of Gary Gygax, the co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons. Manganiello has emphasized the importance of maintaining Gygax’s influence and vision as the franchise moves forward with new creative endeavors.

The announcement represents Wizards of the Coast’s ongoing effort to expand D&D’s presence in mainstream media and entertainment, capitalizing on the franchise’s recent surge in popularity. By assembling established storytellers under the D&D Icons umbrella, the company aims to produce high-quality content that appeals to both longtime fans and newcomers to the tabletop RPG community.
