Miami Sheriff Rejects GTA 6 Marketing Proposal

Miami-Dade County officials proposed an ambitious marketing partnership with Rockstar Games to promote Grand Theft Auto 6, which is heavily inspired by Miami geography and culture. The pitch deck, submitted in late June 2026, outlined a campaign to transform parts of the county with GTA branding, including airport signage reading “Welcome to Vice City,” wrapped Metromover trains, billboards, and immersive arrival experiences at Miami International Airport. County officials framed the partnership as “a unique opportunity to generate revenue for the County while showcasing Miami-Dade to a massive audience.”

However, the proposal immediately encountered significant opposition from local law enforcement. Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz issued a statement opposing the deal, arguing that “Grand Theft Auto is a videogame franchise built around criminal activity”—directly contrary to law enforcement’s public safety mission. The sheriff’s office emphasized that the promotion would embody precisely what officers “work every single day to prevent.” The judiciary also expressed concerns about the proposal.

The conflict reflects broader tensions between economic opportunity and community values. While tourism officials saw potential benefits in capitalizing on GTA 6’s anticipated massive audience, law enforcement viewed the campaign as incompatible with their public safety messaging and community leadership—a clash between gaming industry marketing and institutional opposition to the game’s criminal-focused themes.
