Brandon Sanderson’s New Book Officially Solves His Biggest Sci-Fi Mystery, 8 Years Later
Brandon Sanderson’s Cytoverse expands with a new installment that resolves a central mystery from his YA sci-fi series Skyward. The narrative universe, which Sanderson first introduced in the 2008 short story “Defending Elysium,” centers on a far future where most of humanity lives in isolated alien-run preserves. After characters unlock psionic powers called cytonics, humanity begins exploring and conquering the worlds of more peaceful species, leading to a series of conflicts known as the Human Wars.
A foundational mystery has haunted the series since its 2018 debut: Earth’s disappearance and humanity’s conquest by an alien alliance called the Superiority. These events exist as ancient history within the Skyward narrative, shaping the entire context of the story and the limitations placed on human civilization. Over nearly a decade, Sanderson has built out this universe across four main books and three novellas co-written with Janci Patterson, gradually expanding the scope and complexity of humanity’s struggle.
The new book marks a significant turning point for the Cytoverse, finally providing answers about what happened to Earth and how humanity fell under Superiority control. This payoff comes eight years after the series began, rewarding longtime readers who have followed humanity’s attempts to reclaim their place among the stars. The resolution appears to connect the foundational lore established in “Defending Elysium” with the ongoing narrative, bringing together plot threads that have developed across the series’ multiple installments.
