Nearly a decade on, legendary director Hideki Kamiya says he’s “100% serious” about reviving Xbox’s canned Scalebound

Hideki Kamiya, the legendary director behind Bayonetta, Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry, and Okami, has renewed his determination to revive Scalebound, the Xbox-exclusive action game cancelled in 2017 after nearly a decade of dormancy.

Scalebound was first announced at E3 2014 as a PlatinumGames title featuring a soldier fighting alongside a dragon companion. Following a delay, Microsoft cancelled the project in 2017 under then-Xbox leader Phil Spencer.

In a recent VGC interview, Kamiya stated he is “100% serious” about resurrecting the title. When asked if he had already contacted new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, Kamiya said no—but expressed willingness to reopen professional discussions about the project.

The timing is noteworthy given the leadership change at Xbox, with Sharma’s appointment potentially creating new opportunities for previously cancelled titles. Kamiya’s own recent perseverance—spending nearly two decades developing Okami 2—demonstrates his commitment to reviving projects he’s passionate about.

While no concrete steps toward revival have been announced, Kamiya’s recent comments suggest a potential path forward should Xbox choose to greenlight the project again.
