PlayStation Disc Production Decline Data Was ‘Misleading’, It’s Reported
Sony has clarified that a production capacity figure cited in an earlier report about its PlayStation disc manufacturing was misleading. The company announced earlier this year that it would cease producing physical PlayStation discs for new releases beginning in January 2028, marking a significant shift toward an all-digital future.
Following the official announcement, an Austrian media outlet reported details from an interview with Dietmar Tanzer, President of Sony DADC, the division responsible for disc manufacturing and distribution. That report suggested disc production rates at a major manufacturing facility would drop to just 10% in 2028. However, it has now been clarified that this figure was misinterpreted—the production will actually decline by 10%, not drop to 10%. This distinction is substantial: the facility will retain approximately 90% of its current manufacturing capacity even after the January 2028 deadline when new physical releases end.
The clarification indicates that while Sony is transitioning to digital distribution as its primary model, it won’t completely eliminate its physical manufacturing infrastructure immediately. The company will maintain significant disc production capacity, potentially supporting legacy systems or other purposes beyond new consumer releases.
