Civilization 7 Officially Gets a Major Sci-Fi Update for 2027
Firaxis Games and publisher 2K announced the first major expansion for Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 during a PAX West panel. Titled Earthrise, the expansion is scheduled for 2027 and will emphasize space-age gameplay, featuring an expanded space race mechanic alongside new civil engineering systems designed to help players combat natural disasters.
Before the expansion arrives, Firaxis will release free updates to extend the game’s content and polish. Update 1.5.0, arriving later this month across all platforms, focuses on quality-of-life improvements and community-requested features. The patch introduces an Earth map mode allowing players to establish their civilization at a historically accurate starting location, alongside enhancements to the map generation system.
The announcement reflects Firaxis’ commitment to sustained post-launch support for the 4X strategy title, balancing paid expansion content with free updates to enhance depth and replayability. The reveal comes as part of PAX West’s gaming industry showcase, demonstrating ongoing developer investment in the title since its launch.
