Gamescom apologises for how it initially responded to indie developer hardware thefts

Gamescom has issued an apology following widespread criticism over its handling of hardware thefts that occurred at the 2026 gaming event in Cologne. Multiple indie developers reported that laptops and other equipment were stolen overnight from their exhibition booths.

The incident affected several exhibitors, including indie developer Ryan Laley, whose losses effectively forced him to end his booth presence early. Iam8bit reported the theft of two laptops, while Tessera Studios also experienced theft from the shared business area where indie exhibitors were located.

Gamescom’s initial response drew severe backlash from the community. Rather than offering compensation or meaningful support, the event organizers reportedly engaged in victim-blaming and attempted to impose additional security service costs on the affected developers—a tone-deaf approach that compounded the frustration of those already dealing with significant losses.

In response to the negative reception, Gamescom released an updated statement acknowledging the misstep. “Our first response did not strike the right tone, and it did not show the people affected the empathy they deserved,” the organization stated.

The event has now committed to concrete improvements, including a dedicated security review specifically focused on indie exhibitors and their protection. Additionally, Gamescom has pledged to hold a developer roundtable to gather feedback directly from those affected and gather insights for future events. These measures represent an attempt to rebuild trust with the indie developer community.
