Saber CCO Tim Willits blames layoffs on games industry overspecialization: ‘Studios that have a couple hundred employees that work on one game are going to struggle’
Saber Interactive’s Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits has attributed some of the gaming industry’s current challenges, including widespread layoffs, to a trend toward overspecialization within studios. In an interview with PC Gamer, Willits argued that the industry’s focus on increasingly massive, single-title projects with highly specialized teams is creating instability and vulnerability.
The context for his comments reflects the ongoing trend of game scopes expanding dramatically. Blockbuster titles like GTA 6 exemplify this, featuring entire dedicated teams focused on specialized tasks such as NPC character art direction. This approach has become increasingly common among major studios, but Willits suggests it may be counterproductive.
“Studios that have a couple hundred employees that work on one game are going to struggle,” Willits stated, highlighting the significant risk of this business model. When a single project becomes the primary focus, studios face critical financial and operational vulnerability if that game underperforms or production delays occur.
In contrast, Willits emphasized that Saber Interactive has deliberately avoided these pitfalls through a different approach to studio organization and game development. His comments contribute to a broader industry conversation about sustainable development practices and how studios can structure themselves to weather economic pressures and workforce reductions more effectively.
