Sony clarifies PlayStation disc production is dropping by 10 percent in 2028, not to 10 percent
Sony has clarified a significant misunderstanding regarding PlayStation disc manufacturing that had sparked industry concern. Reports had suggested that PlayStation disc production would be slashed by 90 percent, but Sony DADC (Digital Audio Disc Corporation) has now confirmed that output is only expected to decline by 10 percent in 2028—not to 10 percent.
The confusion originated from comments made by DADC chief Dietmar Tanzer during an interview with an Austrian broadcaster in July. His reference to an anticipated “overall product volume decline by 10 percent” was misinterpreted across various media outlets, triggering a wave of misleading reports suggesting a near-total collapse in physical game disc manufacturing for PlayStation.
Sony DADC moved quickly to correct the record, directly contacting media outlets to clarify the distinction. A company spokesperson emphasized that the anticipated decline represents a modest 10 percent reduction in volume, rather than a dramatic downsizing of manufacturing capacity. This clarification should alleviate widespread concerns about PlayStation’s continued support for physical media and disc-based games in the coming years, confirming that Sony remains committed to disc distribution despite the industry’s ongoing shift toward digital sales.
